Kikomun Creek blaze grows as hundreds flee homes near Baynes Lake, B.C.

Evacuation orders and alerts issued as crews battle wildfire burning in remote area, including part of Kikomun Creek Provincial Park

Hundreds of people have been forced from their homes after a wildfire burning in southeastern British Columbia grew significantly in size overnight, prompting evacuation orders and alerts for the East Kootenay region.

Evacuations ordered for Baynes Lake area

About 200 properties were ordered evacuated Sunday evening for the Baynes Lake area, located about 15 kilometres northwest of Cranbrook. The Regional District of East Kootenay said the order affects all properties north of Highway 3/95 from the west boundary of the municipality of Cranbrook to the Alberta border, and east of Bull River Road, north of Highway 3/95.

Evacuation alert issued for Moyie Lake area

An evacuation alert was also issued for the Moyie Lake area, affecting about 290 properties. That alert means residents should be prepared to leave their homes on short notice if conditions worsen.

Kikomun Creek Provincial Park partially closed

The wildfire is burning in remote area, including part of Kikomun Creek Provincial Park. The park is now partially closed, and officials are urging people to avoid the area.

Cause of fire still under investigation

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the B.C. Wildfire Service says it was sparked by lightning on Saturday.
