Labour Wins Big in Local Elections
Projection Shows Party on Course for General Election Victory
Labour has won 1158 seats in the 107 council elections across England, a gain of 186 councillors.
A projection based on current polling weighted by recent by-election results shows that Labour would win a general election with a majority of 40 if it were held today. The projection, made by Election Maps UK, also shows that the Conservative Party would lose 120 seats, while the Liberal Democrats would gain 20 seats.
The results of the local elections are seen as a boost for Labour leader Keir Starmer, who has been in the job for just over a year. Starmer said the results showed that Labour was "back on the side of the British people".
The Conservative Party, which has been in power for the past 12 years, said the results were "disappointing". Conservative leader Boris Johnson said the party would "learn the lessons" from the defeat.
The Liberal Democrats said the results showed that voters were "tired of the Conservative government". Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said the party was "ready for government".
