British Tennis Star Triumphs at Flushing Meadows
London, September 11, 2021 (SportsWire)
Emma Raducanu, 18, became the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam tennis title when she defeated Leylah Fernandez of Canada in the US Open final on Saturday. Raducanu is the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era.
Raducanu, who is ranked 150th in the world, defeated Fernandez, 19, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, in a match that lasted one hour and 51 minutes. The victory marks a meteoric rise for Raducanu, who had never won a match at a Grand Slam tournament before this year's US Open.
Raducanu's victory has been hailed as a major triumph for British tennis. She is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon Championships in 1977. Raducanu's victory has also inspired hope that she can help to revive British tennis, which has been struggling in recent years.
